Sunset Sailing and Helmet Diving

Boracay offers a lot of outdoor activities you can imagine. It is one of the most beautiful places in the Philippines, but more developed than any other. The beaches are one of the main attractions of this island and are great for: sailing, scuba diving, snorkeling, island hopping, surfing, jet-skiing, etc. To avail discount you have to go by group at least 6 people, or pay extra if you want a private tour.  We decided to go on our own tour for two attractions: the Helmet diving and sunset sailing for Php3500  or about USD60. 

I always wanted to try the Helmet Diving. I am not a good swimmer but I like the idea of under-water adventure. I bring my husband with me to share this wonderful experience. We met the diver/tour guide on Station 2 15 minutes walk from our hotel.. We boarded to a speed boat to where they do helmet diving. They provided all the gear on this tour. After a short briefing from our guide, we immediately prepared ourselves to go down the ladder. Once we stepped at the ladder, the 25-kilo helmet was placed on our heads. Someone help us to go down until they release the helmet. It took a minute for me to get the hang of it. Sometimes, water enters the helmet and it freaks me out! But it was eventually removed so its all good.

Willy's Beach Resort | Station 1 Boracay Island

Traveling to Boracay Island is not easy.  There's the transfer plane ride to Kalibo. I highly recommend to get a direct flight to Caticlan Airport for extra fee to skip the three hours van ride. After that the ferry ride and the hotel pick up ride --  Oh yes not a joke! But going to an island  like Boracay that has fresh air , clear blue water, white sugary sand and welcoming locals.  I think its totally worth it.  Its all about being committed to a relaxing journey.

One of the popular resorts of Boracay Island in the Philippines  is Willy's Boracay Beach Resort. It is a beachfront resort located in Station One. We wanted a location that was reputable and offered comforts that would make our stay more enjoyable, but was not overpriced or too commercial. We decided to pick Willy's Beach Resort for our getaway. We stay there for 3D/2N on a Deluxe room, we pay Php20,000 or about USD500.00 for two rooms.  It offered air conditioning in every room, had its own restaurant and beach bar.

On this exact location is the Willy's Rock. Locals claim Willy’s Rock is Boracay’s most recognizable landmark and probably the most photographed place in Boracay. On the top of this rock is  a statue of the Virgin Mary.

Boracay Island Hopping Tour

Island hoping is one of the most popular activities here in Boracay. It easy to make an arrangement, as boats are everywhere. The boatman will also approach you if you have already gone to island hopping. To rent a boat (or "banca" to the local) it cost Php1,500 or about 25 USD.  It also includes the snorkeling gears , which I know some people are not comfortable to use rented gear but at least you have that option if you needed too.

Departure time is around 10 am, after 30 minutes of boat ride we reached the snorkeling site. We became so excited seeing the blue-water and group of fish swimming by. After seeing the wonders of the sea, we decided to proceed with the island hopping.

Alona Tropical Beach Resort Panglao Island, Philippines

On our two weeks vacation to my homeland Philippines , my husband  and I got a chance to explore this beautiful island of Bohol. This time we decided to go a little far from the city to get the best relaxation we both needed. A friend of mine recommended Alona Beach resort for a real tropical feel. No doubt it is indeed a tropical paradise for a snowbird  like us. The beach is located at the end of the stretch of Alona beach sandwiched by the more expensive class A resorts - Amorita on the right (hilltop) and Hennan on the left.

Visit The Philippine Tarsiers Conservatory

We have visited the Tarsier Conservation Area as part of our guided tour of Bohol Island. When we entered the conservation area it was handy to have a staff member on hand to show you where the Tarsier was situated. We did not realize that they were so small. The eyes are quiet large to their body size and also their small fingers and toes that they use for holding onto the branches. Camera flash is prohibited, they also have a  much bigger conservatory with short hike for extra fee. They even claim that the fees collected from visitors will goes to the development of the conservatory. Hopefully that funds are being wisely used to conserve this beautiful animal.

You need to know about Tarsier: The Tarsier is a small species of primate that is found inhabiting the well-vegetated forests on a number of islands in south-east Asia. Although fossil records show that Tarsiers would have once been found on mainland Asia, Europe, North America and in Africa, modern Tarsiers are today restricted to just a handful of islands in Malaysia, Indonesia and the southern Philippines. 

One thing, do not stare straight to their eyes for too long since you might end up wanting one for a pet. :)

Take a Cruise at Loboc River Philippines

On arrival at our hotel in Panglao Islands, Bohol Philippines we were introduced to a local guide whom we hired for the day to show us around the sights of Bohol. One attraction he recommended was the River Cruise from Loboc in the south of Bohol Island. Loboc River is one of top destinations in the island province of Bohol, aside from the Chocolate Hills and its Tarsiers. The town of Loboc  is about 30 minutes ride from the city of Tagbilaran where the Tagbilaran Airport is located. 

The ride was so refreshing and the view is breathtaking. The "eat all you can" buffet had a fair selection of Filipino food, although the quality was not exceptional. The length of time of travel  is ok and the weather was perfect. Through the river it stopped at a floating hut where you watch a group of kids playing their guitars for us, singing and dancing. I found them entertaining and reflecting the people and the culture there. My husband and I  really enjoyed that part!

Corregidor Island Bataan Philippines

I took my husband to Corregidor Island last April 2010 and one of the best days of our visit to Manila. Leaving from the Manila Bay waterfront via Sun Cruises, the ferry ride is about an hour long, and includes a thorough history lesson of the island fortress. When we arrived to the island we were instructed to board one of the tour buses. Conducted in Filipino, English, and Japanese; you were assigned to a tram based on your language. It was a quick tour; no time was wasted as we went to the historical places and memorials. 

First stop at the port, Battery Way, Topside (aka “Mile Long”) Barracks, The eternal flame, The War Memorial, The Corregidor Cinema, The Spanish Lighthouse, by 1pm we proceed to the Main base for our Buffet Lunch. After that is the Malinta tunnel famous for light and sound show. We met up with the bus at the other end and preceded to a Japanese memorial, on the way, we were greeted by General Douglas McArthur himself. 

Then again, I was more fascinated by the guns. We then proceeded to a Filipino Memorial then Japanese Memorial. The tour does a good job of describing the island's pre-war history and its part in World War II. Around 4:30 pm back to Manila.

Visit the Chocolate Hills in Bohol Philippines

The Chocolate Hills are  group of unusually shaped hills located in the middle of the island of Bohol in Philippines. This extraordinary landscape is unique to this small island. Estimate there is more than 1,300 individual hills cover more than 50 square kilometers that you can only see in Bohol. The hills are not huge; the highest one barely reaches 120 meters in height. 

Where it is: In the center of Bohol province in the Philippines, on one of the major islands of the Visayas.

Visit Tagaytay City, Cavite | Philippines

Every Filipino loves Tagaytay City, it is the best place to cool down on a hot summer weather.  I have to say, so much have changed since the last time I came here. Cant help but feel nostalgic being there.  Local government did a good job by implementing rules regarding fees on the amenities and activities.

Our first stop is the Picnic Grove.  From here you will see the open field where some are flying kites, kites are sold there as well. Over looking is the Taal Lake  that allows you to take a scenic photo with it surrounded by the trees and lovely flowers.
