Visit Inyo National Forest and Sierra Nevada Mountain

The gorgeous scenery of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

The Eastern Sierra Mountain range is California's backbone. The U.S. highway 395 which runs east of the Sierra Nevada range would have to be one of California's most spectacular drives. Coming from Ventura we stop by at Bishop, CA. Bishop is the second largest town in the Eastern Sierra and a hub for outdoor enthusiasts because there are plenty or recreational opportunities nearby for climbers, hikers and cyclists. The town is surround by the high peaks of the Sierra’s to the west and the White Mountains to the east. Needless to say then the town has unbelievable views in whichever direction you look.

We drove out to Inyo Craters which is between highway 395 and Mammoth Lakes Village. The dirt road is a bit rugged.  The trail is marked by bluish-green triangles nailed to the trees, so it's hard to miss. The hike has a bit of a gradual incline, and it took our lungs a little while to adjust, especially because of the altitude. It was a short hike to the craters. On the way, make sure you stop and smell the tree bark.

Our youngest hiker was only 6 months old  and he enjoyed it.

Created by steam explosions from volcanic activity, these gigantic craters are like inside-out domes, very beautiful and definitely worth seeing at least once in your life.

And because of the higher elevation, you get a unique view of the crater.

The actual crater is filled with trees. Nice views from up there though.

When you get to the craters, be sure to have your camera out! You'll want to take photos of the small greenish-blue crater and then the other crater that has trees surrounding it.  I don't think you can hike down to the little ponds in the center. As a heads-up, you might want to wear a  hat and bring a bottle of water when you do the hike on summer time as it gets really hot in mid afternoon.
