Places we Visit in Western New York for Holidays

Monday, January 7, 2019
We stopped at the New York State Welcome Center at the Grand Island  on the way from Scranton, PA  to Buffalo. To get to this WNY Welcome Center, you have to use the Whitehaven Road exit on the 190. What awaits you is a HUGE " I Love NY" sign and a building that is part museum and part snack bar. Inside there is a lot of NY history on the walls plus a huge sitting area and many table to eat at. There is a Taste of NY snack shop with all kinds of "goodies" from Western NY for sale.  Food is a little pricey but not unexpected. There is a huge amount of parking both for cars and  trucks plus a number of electric charging stations.

We have been gone for nearly seven years but I guess we still NY!

This is one of my favorite welcome centers we have ever been.

1. The Buffalo City Hall

Soaring 32 stories above Buffalo, the city’s municipal government seat offers spectacular panoramic views and fascinating insights into the history of the area. You cannot miss Buffalo’s municipal government building, which towers above the otherwise low city skyline. Buffalo City Hall is the gem of this city in upstate New York. Be sure to see the interior, which is just as beautiful as the outside.

The city hall is located at 65 Niagara Square, the hub of downtown Buffalo.

2. Winter trip at Niagara Falls, New York

When the temperatures drop and the crowds thin, Niagara Falls State Park becomes even more magical. With trees that sparkle and views that take your breath away. The water and beauty doesn't stop when the summer ends, and there is nothing more breathtaking than the Niagara Falls in the winter.

Not just for honeymooners, Western New York’s Niagara Falls offers inspiring views of one of the world’s most famous waterfalls, along with history, wine and adventure.

3. Visit Buffalo and  Erie County Naval and Military Parks

Canalside is a great place to visit at least once. There is a small but informative museum before you board the three ships that are permanently docked there. You follow a well-marked path through the ships, seeing all the major areas in ships and subs in the World War II era. Many of the rooms also have exhibits, telling you about the people who worked on these ships.

4. Stop by at Key Bank Center and Alumni Plaza

We hadn't been to this arena since it was renamed as KeyBank Center. We like  what the've done it. The Alumni Plaza  is where the Sabres honor their former players.  It is the largest indoor arena in Western New York, seating 19,070 fans in its normal configuration, and was constructed primarily for the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League (NHL).  And as being a big Sabres fan no trip to downtown Buffalo without stopping by here.

What place do you want to visit or you have been during winter? Share it with us on the comment below.

  4. The Buffalo City hall is a huge building, too big to be called a city hall. I would be interested in the opportunity to visit the three military ships. I would not mind visiting Niagara Falls again.

  20. That's one big city whole, well, after all New York is one big city. Is it really the Niagara falls we all know, or it a man-made park? Sorry a bit ignorant about this.
